Corbels have a distinct quality that has always captured my attention. Whether displayed at the peak of a historic building or perched under the lip of a fireplace mantel, these artistic details are always pleasing to the eye.

Where to Find the Base for Your Corbels

Corbels come in all shapes and sizes. They can be purchased at most large chain hardware stores. I usually find them stocked near the trim and molding section. My favorite places to find corbels are thrift stores, flea markets, and yard sales. I recently bought beautiful corbels I used on my floating mantle for less than $4 each at a local consignment store.

Preparing the Corbels for a Chippy Paint Effect

Once you have located the corbels, you need to decide if you want to apply a chippy crackled paint effect on top of the current color or replace the base color. In either case, you need to lightly scuff off any shine with fine-grain sandpaper. I elected to completely remove the surface finish of my consignment store corbels.

Applying the Chippy Paint Finish

With the corbels properly sanded, you are ready to apply the shabby chic, chippy paint finish. To do so, you will need white school glue and the color of water-based paint you desire. Apply a thin even coat of school glue to the surface of the corbel. Allow the glue to sit undisturbed until it becomes thick and tacky to the touch. Now, using single strokes in one direction, apply the water-based paint.

Finishing the Shabby Chic Corbel

Once the corbel is completely covered in water-based paint, allow it to dry. You can speed up the drying process and enjoy watching cracks and fissures appear before your very eyes by using a hair dryer set on low heat. Keep the dryer moving at all times and at least 3 inches away from the surface.

Ways to Use Shabby Chic Corbels

Now you have beautiful chippy, rustic, farmhouse, or shabby chic corbels. You can mount them on the wall as a simple object ledge or incorporate them into a larger project. By mounting two corbels side-by-side you can place a board on top for a beautiful wall shelf. The possibilities are endless.
